South Tipperary Local Authorities have entered into a contract with Clean Ireland Recycling for the sale of its waste collection service.
Clean Ireland Recycling is a well-regarded, family owned refuse collection company, based in County Clare. They already collect household waste from customers in South Tipperary, mainly in the towns of Cahir, Cashel and Tipperary.
The sale will guarantee security of service to all householders as we hand over operations of our waste collection to one of the country’s most reputable operators.
The service will transfer to Clean Ireland Recycling, from 31 October 2011. In the interim there will be no change to waste collection arrangements and customers should continue to present their waste as normal.
Clean Ireland Recycling has committed to offering a highly competitive price structure for the service in the coming years, as well as a service of the highest standards and they will issue an information pack to all customers in due course.
There are a number of reasons why the South Tipperary Local Authorities (namely, South Tipperary County Council, Clonmel Borough Council, Carrick-on-Suir Town Council, Cashel Town Council and Tipperary Town Council) needed to reach this decision to sell their waste collection service. Firstly, the customer base has reduced significantly over the past number of years. In addition, the introduction of EU Directives on the pre-treatment of waste going to landfill and the introduction of a 13.5% VAT charge to local authority services has resulted in South Tipperary Local Authorities being faced with an unsustainable financial position in relation to the waste collection service throughout South Tipperary.
A comprehensive review of all options to the Council in relation to the retention of its waste collection service was carried out. Following careful consideration, and a competitive process with a number of private sector waste management companies, the decision was taken to transfer the service to Clean Ireland Recycling.
This was an extremely difficult decision to make, as the Council’s waste collection service has been part of a positive engagement between local communities and the Council for many years. We are satisfied, however, based on Clean Ireland Recycling’s excellent track record that householders will experience an equivalent level of service under the new operator.
To date South Tipperary Local Authorities have operated a very generous waiver system. Clean Ireland Recycling have been happy to commit to the existing waiver arrangements for a period of 12 months.
