U16 TIPPERARY CUP

The U16s made their exit from the Tipperary Cup at the quarter-final stage when they
lost out to league leaders St. Kevins at Newhill park on Saturday morning. Clerihan
began brightly and didn’t allow Kevins any space or time on the ball. An unfortunate
lapse allowed the Kevins centre-forward through for an easy goal after ten minutes but
that was to be the only defensive slip-up of the first half. Dale Greene , playing through
the pain barrier with a troublesome hip injury , was outstanding at centre-half while
goalkeeper Liam Powell made one tremendous point-blank save. The second half saw
Clerihan pose more of an attacking threat with Reno Roche looking the most likely to
unhinge the home defence with his pace. However , a wonderful strike gave Kevins a
two-goal advantage on the hour mark , leaving Clerihan with a mountain to climb. The
last twenty minutes saw Clerihan throw everything into attack with James Maher almost
scoring from a Rory Maher corner and Stephen Sheehan close with two efforts. On the
day , however , the Kevins goal remained intact and Clerihan must now focus on the
upcoming Plate competition , a trophy that looks well within the grasp of this team on the
evidence of today. Team captain Rhys McMorrow and Rory Maher were outstanding on
the day and everybody else responded by upping their own game significantly.

U14 NSL TEMPLEMORE 4 CLERIHAN 2

The U14s day turned into a bit of a farce when , after travelling to Templemore , they
were told that the pitch was unplayable and both teams returned to Clerihan to play the
game. Templemore proved to be a formidable outfit and were good value for their 1-0
half-time lead. A deflection off a Clerihan defender following a corner after the restart
made it 2-0 to Templemore and it was 3-0 shortly after , as the Clerihan defence really
struggled against strong speedy opponents. Luke Hahessy converted a penalty to give
Clerihan a glimmer of hope but Templemore responded quickly with a fourth goal before
Luke Hahessy then headed home a Jack Burke free-kick to complete the scoring. A
season that had started so well has taken quite a nose-dive in recent weeks as many of the
lads seem to have lost their form. We can only hope that there is a big improvement next
week for the trip to Herbertstown in Limerick for the SFAI cup tie.

U10A LEAGUE PEAKE VILLA 5 CLERIHAN 2

The U10s travelled to Thurles on Sunday morning and gave an excellent account of
themselves against probably the best u10 team in the league. This was a far stronger
Peake Villa team than that which played out a 1-1 draw some weeks back in Clerihan
and they started in whirlwind fashion. Two goals within minutes of the start of the game
showed that they meant business and it would have been far worse but for Clerihan’s
man-of-the-match , goalkeeper Ryan Walsh. Once the lads settled , they played some
lovely football and were rewarded when good passing left Cathal O’Mahoney with a
simple tap-in goal to leave the home side 2-1 in front at the interval. The match was all-
square early in the second half as Micheal Quinlan , who was exceptional throughout ,

ST KEVINS 2 CLERIHAN 0

scored a fine goal when he converted a pass from Daragh Hurley. Clerihan needed to
keep things tight at this stage but , unfortunately , conceded straight from the kick-off,
a score that really deflated the lads. Peake Villa went on to add two more , finshing the
game much more strongly , but this was a really good workout that should stand the lads
in good stead for the games to come.

U16 TIPPERARY CUP CLERIHAN 5 CLONMEL CELTIC 1

The u16s produced the stand-out performance of the weekend with an emphatic victory over Clonmel Celtic at the community field on Saturday. Stephen Sheehan gave Clerihan the lead after 10 minutes with a brilliant strike from 20 metres after Reno Roche had set him up and made it 2-0 shortly after when he surprised the goalkeeper at the near post. Clerihan got a dream start to the second half when Rory Maher scored from a free-kick fully 35 metres from goal but Celtic pulled one back to give them a glimmer of hope. It was short-lived , however , as Stephen Sheehan outpaced the Celtic defence to complete his hat-trick before Brendan Byrne converted another Reno Roche cross to make it five. This was an outstanding display from all concerned with the midfield trio of Rhys McMorrow , Rory Maher and Reno Roche totally dominant from start to finish and really intelligent in their distribution of the ball. Although not troubled to any great degree , the Clerihan defence was very assured throughout , making this the best team performance from the group this season.

U14 NSL CLERIHAN 0 NENAGH 4

The second game at the field saw the u14s go down to a very strong Nenagh outfit and they could have no complaints with the result. Nenagh made a first-half breakthrough and crucially scored a second just before half-time. Any hopes of a Clerihan comeback were shattered with the concession of a third within minutes of the restart , goalkeeper Eoin Power making an excellent parry only to see the ball go over the line despite the efforts of defenders to clear. The visitors added a fourth to make it a day to forget for the Clerihan lads who won’t meet too many teams of this calibre over the course of the season.

U12A LEAGUE PEAKE VILLA 3 CLERIHAN 0

A brave effort from the u12s in Thurles on Saturday afternoon failed to stop Peake Villa from taking maximum points. The home side exerted plenty of early pressure and were good value for their half-time one goal lead. The Clerihan defence coped fairly well overall with Cathal Ryan outstanding at centre-back but silly errors were to cost dearly. Two second-half goals gave the scoreline a rather false look as Clerihan were well in the game throughout. Callum Meagher and Daniel Fitzpatrick had plenty of midfield possession but the team is struggling to score goals and there were very few chances created , the home goalkeeper having a very easy game.

U10A LEAGUE CLERIHAN 2 ST KEVINS 5

Another slow start from the u10s saw St Kevins take an early lead but Ryan Walsh replied minutes later with a clinical finish. The visitors were soon back in front before Daragh Hurley equalised with a cracking finish after the ball came back off the crossbar. St Kevins made it 3-2 at the end of an exciting first-half and dominated the second period , adding two more goals as the Clerihan lads wilted under the pressure. Aiden Maher was the undisputed Clerihan man-of-the-match with a power-packed midfield display while Jack Fitzpatrick deserves great credit for playing despite being very ill the day before and was his usual brilliant self. It was a good workout for the Clerihan lads who now know that they will have to up their game in terms of work-rate and speed in order to challenge the better teams in this league.

U13A LEAGUE

The concession of an early goal proved to be decisive as Clerihan suffered a major
setback in Thurles on Saturday afternoon. The home side were quick out of the blocks
and had the ball in the Clerihan net after just three minutes. Clerihan set about the job of
getting back into the game with Alan O’Donnell and Glenn Cullinane assuming control
of the midfield sector. Numerous chances were created but Clerihan lacked the killer
instinct in front of goal to take full advantage. The Peake Villa goal enjoyed its fair
share of luck also with three balls cleared off the line , Liam McGrath being particularly
unlucky not to score.Despite their best efforts , it was one of those days for the Clerihan
lads when a goal could not be bought and this reverse sees them drop further down the
league table.

U11A LEAGUE CLONMEL TOWN A 2 CLERIHAN 1

The u11s suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday at the Clonmel Town
complex but the general concensus was that they were desperately unlucky not to at
least get a draw. Denis Mulcahy was inches away from giving Clerihan the best possible
start but just failed to connect with an inviting cross from the right. Town took the lead ,
a good shot just deceiving goalkeeper Aidan Lonergan who couldn’t keep it out and
doubled their advantage with a soft goal from a corner. Callum Meagher then drove
through the home defence but his well-struck shot hit the post with the keeper beaten.
The second half saw Clerihan up the pressure and Anthony Phelan rattled the crossbar
with a wonderful header. The same player was on hand to head home after Conor Ryan’s
corner had been flicked on at the near post. This was the signal for Clerihan to throw
everything into attack in an effort to get the equaliser and Callum Meagher , Cormac
Freier and Anthony Phelan all came close. At the other end , Aidan Lonergan made a
great save to deny Town a goal and Riain Bolton was outstanding in clearing all danger.
As if to prove that luck was not with Clerihan , Evan Mullins brilliant strike cannoned
off the post and away to safety , the third occasion in the match that the woodwork had
denied the Clerihan lads a goal. However , the result aside , this was a fine performance
from a squad that is developing into one of the best in the club. All played their part on
the day but a special mention for Conor Og Ryan and Brian O’Sullivan , both of whom
were outstanding in unfamiliar defensive roles in the second half.
