CLERIHAN SCHOOLBOYS FC

U13 LEAGUE CLERIHAN 3 PEAKE VILLA 0

The U13s bounced back from a couple of recent defeats with a well-deserved victory over Peake Villa. Conditions were very difficult with driving wind and rain but Clerihan still managed to play some good football , especially in the first half. Daniel Fitzpatrick took the ball out of defence on 15 minutes , skipped past a couple of challenges before playing a lovely pass to Luke Delahunty , who smashed a wonderful shot to the net from the edge of the penalty area. The visitors pushed on in search of an equaliser but were caught on the break as Aaron Blanche kept his cool and beat the advancing goalkeeper from close range. The second half was dominated by Clerihan but the only addition to the scoreline was another good finish from Aaron Blanche after Shane Hickey had been fouled and the referee applied the advantage. This was a welcome three points and should get their season really up and running. Man-of-the-match for Clerihan was Daniel Fitzpatrick at centre-back with a strong , composed performance.

U13B LEAGUE MOYGLASS 4 CLERIHAN 0

A disappointing display from this squad who failed to build on the promise shown in their last game against stronger opposition. The defence was all at sea in the early stages , allowing a Moyglass attacker to shoot unchallenged to the roof of the net. When Michael Cleary made a good save after 20 minutes , nobody reacted and a Moyglass forward put the rebound to the net. The second period was even more one-sided as the Clerihan midfield were completely over-run by their opponents. The third goal arrived early in the half and another good save from Michael Cleary was returned to the net for the fourth , as all the defenders stood still. The final scoreline would undoubtedly have been greater but for a man-of-the-match display from John Mulcahy at left-back and excellent goalkeeping from the over-worked Michael Cleary. It was disappointing to see that Clerihan never worked the Moyglass goalkeeper with too many players taking extra touches instead of playing the ball to better-placed colleagues.

U10 LEAGUE CLONMEL TOWN B 2 CLERIHAN 6

After weeks of training , the U10s kicked off their league with a good win in Clonmel. It was very apparent in the early stages that these lads hadn’t played a match for some time , with many unaware of the duties of their positions. An exception was Micheal Quinlan who tracked back time after time to cut out danger. As they settled , Clerihan began to move the ball better and Liam Mulcahy opened the scoring after 10 minutes. There followed the best two goals of the day , two wonderful strikes from Cathal O’Mahoney to the roof of the net for a 3-0 lead. Town pulled a goal back before the interval , an excellent finish after the Clerihan defence was pulled all over the place. The second period was highlighted by a fine hat-trick from Daragh Hurley after improved approach play from Clerihan. Jack Fitzpatrick was unlucky to deflect a shot into his own net as he tried to clear to give Town a second. Overall it was a good display which , hopefully , can be carried on into next weeks home tie against Peake Villa.

U9 BLITZ

The U9s had their first blitz of the season with games against Gortnahoe and Clonmel Town. It is a learning curve for these very young lads , who will improve by getting these games on a regular basis. On the day , the Clerihan lads found things tough, going down 1-6 to Gortnahoe with Evan Kiely the Clerihan goalscorer. A much-improved effort against Clonmel Town was not enough to prevent a similar outcome with Danny Dunne scoring a fine goal for Clerihan. Credit must go to the lads for their whole-hearted efforts which will get their rewards in the months ahead. The Clerihan squad on the day was Kieran O’Donnell, Donncha Keeley , Aran Larkin , Danny Dunne , Killian O’Keeffe , Hugh Fitzgerald and Evan Kiely.
