In Clerihan community field on Sunday morning the very first ever Girls minor team took to the field against Ballyporeen although the result was not in their favour they did themselves proud and never gave in all through the game even though they were up again a superior team.Aisling Ryan scored the very first goal and score for the team midway through the first half,  Emer Lyons and Eileen Flannery shared 5 the rest of the scores and Rachel Hennessey scored the last point of the day in a total of 1:06 which was very creditable against such strong opponents so we wish the girls lots of luck for the remaining games and hopefully their first historic win will come in the near future.

Player of the match was outstanding young goalie Holly Corcoran.

A courageous performance from an understrength Clerihan outfit almost got a famous win after Steven Earley had shot what looked like the winning point with time up on the clock but Cahir managed to sweep down the field and equalise 2 minutes later and in extra time the battle that had gone on before took its toll on Clerihan who lost 2 players with serious injuries and simply ran out of steam to their more illustrious and more experienced opponents.

 

Clerihan shocked Cahir when Jamie Kelly scored an opportunistic goal with an early free, from there to the end Clerihan fought toe to toe with Cahir and the lead swapped hands on several occasions culminating in those final few frantic minutes, Indeed if Clerihan had been at full strength (5 Players unavailable due to injury and work reasons) victory would have been theirs in normal time, but credit Cahir whose extra fitness proved to be decisive in extra time. Instead of singling out any individual player credit goes to the 18 that played on the day and hopefully their day will come soon and winning 6 matches during the year shows an upward trend that hopefully will keep rising the coming years.

Our under 8, 10 and 12 hurling squads  played for the Cooney community shield over the weekend for the harvest festival celebrations  which was a huge success, all the boys really enjoyed the games which were watched over by the eager eyed ref Ciaran Barrett. Presentations were made on Sunday at the festival by the Johnny B and the team captains received the shields and all the boys were presented with medals , well done to all the teams involved, under 8’s were the slievenamon hilbillies v clerihan warriers  , under 10’s were clerihan tigers v clerihan wolves and under 12’s were slievenamon fox’s v clerihan indians . thanks to ciaran for his expertise in controlling the lads and keep up the good work, you are the stars of the future.

The club is celebrating the Harvest Festival this weekend in what is deemed to be a fantastic time for everyone. We kick off the weekend with an underage hurling blitz with the 8’s, 10’s and 12’s in action, we have medals and a cup for the overall winners. This is followed up by the fashion show and the night is finished off with barn dance so everyone is invited to come along’
Our under 16’s were in action during the week, first we had the battle against Carrick Davins in Kilsheelan on Wednesday evening, I can honestly say that bunch of lads did the club proud in their performance, they soldiered on right until the very end and really showed Davins that we were a side to be reckoned with. The final score did not do them justice as it did not reflect on the effort they put in , likewise they were beaten in the county semi final against Upperchurch in Newinn  on Sat morning also turning out a fine performance but getting caught early in the second half and drifting back.

 

Clerihan fought on tirelessly being denied three goals by the Upperchurch keeper they drifted back and eventually had to settle for second best. Again this was a super performance by the lads who can all hold their heads high and remember you’ll come back next year stronger and wiser. Well done lads and thanks for all the hard work and effort you put in this week and all year, and well done Tony and Mick for those endless hours at the training field. Keep up the good work lads.

 

Clerihan Junior B footballers’ qualified for the semi-finals with a 3:9 to 2:7 victory in over Ballyporeen on Sunday in Ballylooby.  Indeed if Clerihans finishing matched their excellent approach work victory would have been far more emphatic and to Ballyporeens credit they would not give up. Leading 2:5 to 1:4 at the break with goals from veteran Andrew Kennedy and to dominant midfielder Neville Melbourne this the end of a sweeping move involving 7 passes through the field Clerihan  never looked in trouble and when captain Brian keane notched the third goal 8 min from time the result was obvious to all.

Although this side is far from the finished article they are improving all the while and it was a victory that involved 1 to 20 players and it would be hard to single one person out but captain Brian Keane with 1:4 from play showed the kind of leadership needed when the chips were down indeed Clerihans tally of 3:9 all came from team play.

Well done to the under 10s and 8s girls football teams who recently played a Munster blitz in Rathkeale, Co. Limerick. There were some great individual performances from the girls on both teams. The girls played teams from Cork, Kerry and Limerick and had some great wins. Thanks to all the coaches and parents who travelled on the day. The future is looking bright for Clerihan Ladies football Club.

Our under 8 boys enjoyed a great day of football at Fethard on Saturday where our skill was tested against Commercials, St. Pats and hosts Fethard who organised a great afternoon for the boys where the Danagher Cup was up for grabs and all the boys were presented with winners medals, a big thanks to Fethard for the organising the day.

 

Our under 12 hurler’s had a super win on Sunday against Mullinahone to become South County winners and the boys displayed a tremendous amount of skill, the first half was very demanding as the heavens opened but Clerihan held their composure, with the wind at their backs they managed to score 4 points to Mullinahone’s 3 and started the second half playing into the wind but they kept the pressure on their opponents with 3 successive wides and eventually  hitting the jackpot with a fantastic goal from Shane Buckley , Mullinahone tried to pick up the pace of the game but the brilliant Clerihan backs prevented them from scoring that badly needed goal, 2 points put Mullinahone back in the game and a free to Clerihan put them 3 points ahead with minutes to go , the final whistle was music to their ears as Clerihan become South County winners for the second time ,well done to all the boys involved and Jerry, John and Liam who put in all the hard work to achieve success. Final score Clerihan 1-5 to Mullinahone 0-5.
