U13A LEAGUE

The concession of an early goal proved to be decisive as Clerihan suffered a major
setback in Thurles on Saturday afternoon.The home side were quick out of the blocks
and had the ball in the Clerihan net after just three minutes. Clerihan set about the job of
getting back into the game with Alan O’Donnell and Glenn Cullinane assuming control
of the midfield sector. Numerous chances were created but Clerihan lacked the killer
instinct in front of goal to take full advantage. The Peake Villa goal enjoyed its fair
share of luck also with three balls cleared off the line , Liam McGrath being particularly
unlucky not to score.Despite their best efforts , it was one of those days for the Clerihan
lads when a goal could not be bought and this reverse sees them drop further down the
league table.

U11A LEAGUE CLONMEL TOWN A 2 CLERIHAN 1

The u11s suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday at the Clonmel Town
complex but the general concensus was that they were desperately unlucky not to at
least get a draw. Denis Mulcahy was inches away from giving Clerihan the best possible
start but just failed to connect with an inviting cross from the right. Town took the lead ,
a good shot just deceiving goalkeeper Aidan Lonergan who couldn’t keep it out and
doubled their advantage with a soft goal from a corner. Callum Meagher then drove
through the home defence but his well-struck shot hit the post with the keeper beaten.
The second half saw Clerihan up the pressure and Anthony Phelan rattled the crossbar
with a wonderful header. The same player was on hand to head home after Conor Ryan’s
corner had been flicked on at the near post. This was the signal for Clerihan to throw
everything into attack in an effort to get the equaliser and Callum Meagher , Cormac
Freier and Anthony Phelan all came close. At the other end , Aidan Lonergan made a
great save to deny Town a goal and Riain Bolton was outstanding in clearing all danger.
As if to prove that luck was not with Clerihan , Evan Mullins brilliant strike cannoned
off the post and away to safety , the third occasion in the match that the woodwork had
denied the Clerihan lads a goal. However , the result aside , this was a fine performance
from a squad that is developing into one of the best in the club. All played their part on
the day but a special mention for Conor Og Ryan and Brian O’Sullivan , both of whom
were outstanding in unfamiliar defensive roles in the second half.

CLERIHAN SCHOOLBOYS FC

 

U16 LEAGUE    CLONMEL TOWN  5   CLERIHAN  0

 

In the end , this proved to be an easy victory for Clonmel Town but Clerihan certainly gave the home side plenty to think about in the first half. Defending strongly and confidently , Clerihan forced their opponents to shoot from distance in an effort to break the deadlock. Rhys McMorrow and Rory Maher were in sparkling form in midfield and created chances for Clerihan which , unfortunately , were not converted. With the game scoreless at half-time , Clerihan were well in it but were undone by a free-kick after the break which goalkeeper Liam Powell parried but the rebound was turned into the net by an attacker in a blatantly offside position.This setback really deflated the Clerihan lads and Town took full advantage to run in four more goals , one from the penalty spot. In fairness to their spirit and attitude , Clerihan continued to cause problems for the Town defence with Luke Hyland , in particular , a constant menace with his pace and skill. If only the form displayed in the first half could be maintained , this side would have a realistic chance of challenging for the Plate.

 

U14 NSL     CLERIHAN  2  TEMPLEMORE  1

 

An excellent display from the U14s resulted in another three points at the community field on Saturday afternoon. Luke Hahessy gave Clerihan the lead with a brilliant header following fine approach play and a great cross from John Alan Lowes. Templemore were back on level terms from the penalty spot shortly after before Luke Hahessy  restored Clerihan’s lead with another sublime finish. There were to be no goals in the second half as Clerihan set about protecting their advantage. As Templemore pushed on for an equaliser , the central defensive partnership of Jack Burke and Eoin O’Donovan stood strong and composed , never offering up any easy opportunity to the visitors. Keenan Cunningham was outstanding in tracking back to help time after time while Shane Hickey was quite brilliant in holding up the ball to give his defenders a breather. There was a final scare as Templemore were awarded a free-kick just outside the area in the dying minutes but Eoin Power pulled off a great save to ensure the victory. This was a great way to bounce back from the setback against Birdhill and a real confidence booster for their upcoming SFAI tie.

 

U12  LEAGUE   CAHIR PARK  5   CLERIHAN  0

 

A very good Cahir Park side proved much too strong for Clerihan and ran out easy winners. Sean Cotter was desperately unlucky not to give Clerihan the lead when his shot beat the goalkeeper but just went inches wide of the post. Cahir responded strongly and a blistering turn of pace saw the left winger leave defenders in his wake before drilling a shot to the roof of the net. The pace of the Cahir lads had the Clerihan defence working hard to keep the deficit to one goal. A big moment in the game came just before half-time when the Clerihan  duo of Sean Cotter and Liam McGrath combined brilliantly for Liam to score only to see the goal disallowed for offside , a dreadful decision from the referee. The second half started in the worst possible fashion from a Clerihan viewpoint , conceding a very soft goal and this really deflated the whole team. Cahir went on to add three more before the end , running through the defence at will and finishing clinically. This was a real wake-up call for the Clerihan lads who were too slow to react to danger on many occasions and made things too easy for an admittedly excellent home side. Cathal Ryan and Callum Meagher in midfield were most prominent on a day when the team could have no argument with the result.

 

U10A LEAGUE   CLERIHAN  2  ST. MICHAELS  4

 

Another really good game of football took place in this league on Sunday morning at the Clerihan all-weather pitch. St . Michael’s started really quickly and had the ball in the Clerihan net within two minutes. However , Clerihan had the better of things for the rest of the first half but just couldn’t find a way past an excellent Michael’s defence. The visitors struck for a second goal just before half-time to leave Clerihan with a lot to do in the second half. A wonderful passing move shortly after the resumption saw Ciaran Moroney finish sweetly to the net to make it 1-2 but an unlucky own goal restored St. Michael’s two goal advantage. Aiden Maher was so unlucky to see his wonderful shot strike the inside of the post and end up in the goalkeeper’s arms while Daragh Hurley hit the outside of the post with another great effort. St. Michael’s scored the goal of the game to make it 4-1 before Ciaran Moroney got his second with an excellent finish after good approach play. This was a fine game overall and the Clerihan lads will be hoping for revenge when they play the reverse fixture in Tipperary later in the season.

U13A LEAGUE   CLERIHAN   0  CLONMEL TOWN  2

 

The Clerihan lads produced a fine performance on the last day of 2011 but still went down to an unlucky defeat at the hands of Clonmel Town. A slow start was to cost Clerihan dearly as poor defending allowed a Town attacker a clear run at goal on 10 minutes and , although goalkeeper Eoin Power got a hand to the shot , he could not keep it out of his net. Alan O’Donnell then got a firm grip of the midfield and proceeded to give a master class in how the game should be played. He was ably assisted by both Aidan Phelan and Shane Hickey and Clerihan began to pose more of a threat going forward. However , despite the best efforts of Liam McGrath , the home side could find no way through and the Town goalkeeper was largely untroubled. The second half saw Clerihan on top for long periods. Rian Quigley and Daniel Fitzpatrick snuffed out the attacking threat from Town but Clerihan still failed to create that elusive goalscoring opportunity. A second goal from the visitors on the stroke of full time following a goalmouth scramble really flattered them and was rough justice for a young Clerihan outfit that had impressed greatly.

 

U13B  LEAGUE   CLERIHAN  0  CLONMEL CELTIC  1

 

A last-minute goal saw Clonmel Celtic take all three points after a disappointing game at the community field on the final day of 2011. Clerihan started brightly and had plenty of possession in the Celtic half. However , there is a real lack of firepower in this squad and the only shot of note came from Seamus McMahon who was unlucky to see his well-struck effort come back off the post. Celtic looked far more threatening when they attacked, breaking through the centre of the Clerihan defence at will , only to be let down by some poor finishing and good goalkeeping from Michael Cleary. Considering that they had conceded eight goals to the same opposition a few months ago , Clerihan would have been happy enough to reach half-time on level terms. This seemed to inspire a greater effort from some in the second half with Daragh Bolger particularly outstanding and looking the one most likely to break the deadlock. However , some decent approach play was ruined by speculative shooting from distance which never troubled the Celtic goalkeeper. With the final whistle looming , Celtic capitalised on more weak defending to score the decisive goal and leave the Clerihan lads with nothing to show for their efforts.

 

U14 NSL     CLERIHAN  1  BIRDHILL  4

 

Clerihan suffered their first defeat of the season on the first Monday of  2012  and there was no argument  about it as Birdhill were by far the better team. Quicker to the ball and more physical in the challenge , the visitors caused no end of problems for the Clerihan lads. Despite this , Clerihan had probably the best chance of the first half when Luke Hahessy just dragged his effort wide of the far post after escaping the clutches of his marker. Birdhill stepped up the pressure after the break and Eoin Power made a fine save from point-blank range with Conor Horan clearing the rebound off the line. The opening goal arrived minutes later , a Birdhill attacker just getting a touch before Tom Sheehan to steer the ball to the net. Clerihan responded well and Sean Maher hit a wonderful shot which looked destined for the top corner only for the goalkeeper to bring off an outstanding save. When a Luke Hahessy shot was blocked down , John Alan Lowes sent a beautiful effort over the goalkeeper and into the net to bring the teams level. However , Birdhill finished much the stronger and ran through an over-worked Clerihan defence for three more goals , although one was scored by an attacker in a blatantly offside position. It is to be hoped that the lads will put this setback behind them quickly  and regroup for next Saturday’s game with Templemore

U11A LEAGUE   CLERIHAN   1   PEAKE VILLA   1

 

An exciting game between two closely-matched sides ended with honours even at the Clerihan all-weather pitch on Saturday morning. The opening exchanges were fairly frantic with neither side creating any goalscoring opportunities. It was the Thurles lads who took the lead after 15 minutes, a sweet strike to the bottom corner giving goalkeeper Aidan Lonergan no chance. Clerihan responded well and Anthony Phelan was unlucky on a couple of occasions with well-struck shots that just missed the target. The second half saw Clerihan take control with Brian O’Sullivan and Cormac Freier putting more pressure on the Villa defence. The equaliser duly arrived, Cormac Freier playing a lovely ball through to Denis Mulcahy who volleyed superbly to the net. Clerihan had a great chance to win it but man-of-the-match Anthony Phelan just put his shot wide from close range. Peake Villa also had a chance but Aidan Lonergan made a wonderful save from point-blank range. A draw was probably the right result on the day and the Clerihan lads can look forward with confidence to the resumption of action in the new year.

 

 

U12A LEAGUE    ST KEVINS  3  CLERIHAN  9

 

The U12s went on a scoring spree at Two-Mile-Borris on Saturday afternoon when they resumed league activity after their prolonged run in the National cup. Ace striker Sean Cotter scored a first-half hat-trick while goals from Callum Meagher and Seamus McMahon made it 5-0 to Clerihan at the break. Sean Cotter got his fourth goal in the second half while Rian Quigley, Liam McGrath and Jack O’Rourke completed the scoring for Clerihan. St.Kevins finished much better than they started and got through for three late goals but there was never any doubt about the outcome with all the Clerihan lads superb on the day. This was a great way to wrap things up for 2011 and the squad can face some tough fixtures in the new year with plenty of confidence.

 

POSTPONED

The U16s game in Bansha was called off early on Saturday morning with the Bansha pitch unplayable while dangerous road conditions meant that Birdhill were unable to travel to Clerihan for their U14 game.
